DEFEATED

Defeat at the Atlanta Summer Olympic Games. American sprinter Dennis Mitchell covers his head with the U.S. flag after losing to the Canadian team (background) in the 4x100 relay final. It was the first time in 19 Olympic runnings that a U.S. team had lost in that event. American long jumper and world-record holder Mike Powell lies in the sand after his final attempt to win gold. Powell, the favorite going into the event, lost to the man considered the greatest track and field athlete ever, Carl Lewis.
